Users Map feature and how to opt-in

(Cough) Look at the ‘installed apps’ list on your phone and you’ll see she already can.

As can I…

It is usefull to see locations, however wouldn’t it then enable the whole world to see where you are and so be seen by ner’-do-wells?
This might in turn make people decide not to put their location on the map, so just do the opposite of hoping to increase usage.
In these days of nasty people using SM for their own ends I’m uncomfortable putting this information on an open site…wouldn’t it be better to just use the relevant dept’ number?

It just has to be a approximate location, put the nearest big town or city to you, the map is only a rough guide after all no one is asking for your exact Google maps location.

Yep, I thought of that, which is probably a reasonable compromis.
btw. …any possibility of making your smiley emoji smaller !!

Seems that @james has been busy beavering away at SF towers following his welcome sojourn…

The only consequence that I see to this is that the feature, being originally designed for Discourse where notification of events is concerned - is that the location/map link only works when a new topic is created.
In circumstances where the topic is non location specific, (ie it is not an invitation to a garden party at chez @Jane_Williamson or a garage sale of sorts etc) it tends to have little meaning/relevance.
What might be more useful is the image clickable link alongside users contributing in a topic but I’m not sure whether that is indeed an option in the scheme of things Discourse.

One thought is that when I click on User Map (on Android tablet) under FAQ it gives me something approaching a map of Nth Hemisphere which i have to fiddle about to get to France…could it set to default to a map of france?

but the user could be outside of France… That said, I think it just requires a “tweak” of the appropriate tit by @james but would mean that only addresses in France would become valid and some users are still non France based which is quite acceptable

As Graham has already alluded to there’s one user, the lovely lady with the mustang from the other thread, I forget her name, who is in California I think, so it skews the map as she is the furthest on the map. It defaults to show everyone, so if there were only people within France it would show just France, but since James is still in Porto (as far as the map is concerned) and ‘Mustang lady’ (sorry, so sorry :see_no_evil:) is west US, it shows a much wider view.

Edit, I’ve just seen there’s also a lady in Reunion , so that will skew things too!

The link in the menu appears to be broken as it’s pointing at https://www.survivefrance.com/https://www.survivefrance.com/u/user-map not at the map itself which is just https://www.survivefrance.com/u/user-map - some setting is expecting a relative rather than absolute URL, I suspect.

@james

I’m looking but can’t see how to edit that…

Have you tried switching it off then on again?!

Fixed it finally!
