Vote Reform?

Is that a real quote, Chris?

Yes it is, from his speech at a music awards ceremony:

Good for him.

Count Binface is at 5-1 or 6-1 depending on the bookie. Farage is odds-on to win atm.

He and his team seem to have been unable to plan more than one move ahead with his by-election antics. He seems to have realised he’s played it disastrously wrong, but does he pull out or risk being beaten by a space lord?

In a nation that favoured Boaty McBoatFace, I can see that the binman is in with a shout. Just for the bantz, a larf

If he pulls out then Binface wins by default, surely? Farage can’t undo his resignation and the calling of the by-election.

And to take Farage down a peg. But Clacton was chosen as his constituency for its fondness for Faragian opinions, so unless the good folk of Clacton really have got fed up with Farage’s lack of effort in representing them, he is still likely to be re-elected.

But absent the other parties it would be a hollow victory.

I could be wrong but I didn’t think the date of the by-election has been set yet, if that makes a difference? I’m just going by what some of his team said about him pulling out, but maybe they didn’t think that through either.

No but he has resigned as an MP and the Chancellor said she will approve his request to be appointed to the position of ā€œCrown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northsteadā€.

This is the mechanism by which an MP can leave the Commons - technically they can’t resign, a measure put into law in the 1620s to stop MPs resigning due to pressure from King Charles 1st,

I’m wondering how the non-Reform votes will tot up in Clacton. Looks like Farage had 46% of the vote on a 59% turnout. There’s scope there for a French style ā€˜not them’ result.

I’m interested to see how Farage tries to spin ā€˜The people vs the Establishment’ when he’s one of the establishment himself and is standing against someone who really doesn’t sound like one of the establishment at all.

Given that Farage apparently hates being laughed at, this could be tough for him. Never mind.

He is reputed to be very thin-skinned and it certainly seems to be coming to the fore over the last few weeks as he’s under increasing pressure. I suspect that he really won’t enjoy the next few weeks as he’ll struggle to set the agenda that he was hoping to set.

I’d be really surprised if there was any sort of upset in the result but, nonetheless, absolutely delighted if there were to be.

I think he’s needled the mainstream press so much that they’ll be asking a lot of questions about party and personal finances. He’s got away with it for far too long by blustering and I hope they’ll get their own back now.

Phil Moorhouse on YouTube reckons that the press are primarily interested in selling papers / getting clicks, so Farage was useful to them and was quoted uncritically because he was a disrupter.

Phil reckons that now Farage is more useful to them as a target for investigations and ā€œshock revelationsā€ now that there is a whiff of corruption about him, and so they will get the knives out.

Thursday 13 August.

I just sent a small donation to Count Binface on Buy me a Coffee. He’s going to have some expenses for the by-election.

It would be so funny if he was elected.

I hope the people of Clacton have a sense of humour
