When will the UK wake up and stop giving passports

Guess this thread is going to be about the channel crossing horror…so to continue
How do these peoplec get into the EU and France in the first place?
If that could be stopped along with a much more efficient, equitable and speedy process to allow potential immigrant to apply for sanctuary. Why are the borders of the 27 states so porous?

The elephant in the room is that few UK politician dare to say we should welcome these people…sad as that is we all know that a majority of Brits just don’t want them in the UK…wind your minds back to Brexit and immigration, these views are still very prevalent…which for avoidance of doubt is not my view.

What is “local spoons”, your transport café, I thought they are far and few now?

Wetherspoons!

Haven’t been in one since yesterday, Ruddles best £1.19 a pint.

Any particular reason you don’t socialise with the French?

I don’t really think that we can take anything that @bazza says seriously. He seems to make up whatever suits his personal point of view, contradicts himself and then just comes up with bluster to cover it up.
Edit: Removed insult, as that’s not appropriate. I stand by the rest of my post though.

My thoughts:
There are 2 different issues. Illegal economic migrants - the solution has to be to make living illegally in the UK less of a walk in the park. Introduce ID cards, tighten up on labour laws. There is nothing unfair about that, it is how most countries operate. The fact that the UK has no ID card system and no labour inspectors to discourage the black labour market makes the UK a soft touch and that is why they head there in vast numbers because once they are there they can blend in easily.
Refugees and asylum seekers - open up easier routes, let them apply from abroad. They have the right to apply. They shouldn’t need to risk their lives. If the illegal economic migrants were discouraged, there would be more resources for dealing with the genuine cases.

hello sandcastle
the reason I do not socialise with many French is because they are similar to the English in being racist. I am mixed race and find other nationalities more open. I must admit the English women are quite accommodating in France though.

It is a shame that you have had such poor experiences, you must have been unfortunate in the people you have met. I have worked with non Europeans and mixed race people and I am fairly sure there was no prejudice against them, they seemed fully integrated and did well within the company.
It is good though that you manage to enjoy France despite not liking the French. I do not think I would want to spend much time in a country where I felt the natives were unfriendly. To me a country is its people and its culture and so I see no point in going to a different country and then keeping it at arms length and seeking out people from my own home country to socialise with. But we are all different.

He’s a troll.

Yes, indeed. That’s what my original post said … but not in such a polite way.

strange thing to say

My wife achieved the 85% minimum score to pass the Life in the UK knowledge test and get her UK passport, but I’d be surprised if anyone on the SF forum could succeed without a great deal of revision.
ed. Oops , but if anyone could, I’d put my money on @Geof_Cox (meant as a compliment not a slight!)

The test is supposed to be about life in the UK, but primarily concerns aspects of UK life such as precise economic stats that pass most of us by,. How many UK born Sikhs are likely to know what percentage of the population they constitute? The test contains very little to do with culture or cultural understanding, it’s simply an exam that requires one to memorise abstract facts from a specific book rather than demonstrate an understanding of the subject.

I hear that many of the “facts” are actually wrong which rather re-enforces the idea it’s an arbitrary hurdle to jump over, rather than demonstration of being integrated into UK society.

The only British immigrants I have met in spain are similar to the benidorm bunch, perhaps cheerful as they seem permanently well-oiled, inside and out. And in general racist, and right wing - although will laugh along with people. And completely un-integrated with Spanish life.

Were I to know any Brits here, would be quite happy to find they were not like that.

Why the UK should wake up and give more passports (or at the very least have constructive, consistent immigration policies):

UK news on immigration statistics made me laugh today, happily saying negative flux with Europe to tune of 94,000 so “on target” for first time. Forgot to mention that these were the UK care workers, lorry drives, veg pickers and so on!

I employed 2 afghans for a number of years. I found them reliable and keen to learn. they came in as refugees which I don’t agree with. we would be better to have an immigration policy and let in a certain number every year. people who will be helpful to the country. people between 18 and 40 so they can contribute to the economy. I would not give them a British passport but an id as a guest worker, the system they had in Germany for the Turks. if they work for a fixed period and keep their noses clean they should be able to apply for citizenship. this would filter out the scroungers and trouble makers.

Well, you have obviously not been to our part of France, as your comments as are misleading as all of your other posts.

Why discriminate against the over 40s?

There is a policy for precisely that, but no way for refugees to get access to it as it costs money.
