Hi VĆ©ronique!, regards

Are you diabetic yourself? I was thinking of purchasing over around 3 bundles of each insulin, those that you mention that comes with like 5 and carry them with me, just to survive around 3 to 4 months. But in case of any emergency that I could have lost them or they got hot and decomposed for whatever reason, I can just get an appointment with an endocrinologist in France and ask for a medical prescription for the matter?

I donā€™t know if a prescription from a doctor over here, would work in there, and sadly I donā€™t see an endocrinologist frequently enough, and I should according to my condition, but I can see one before going to get a valid prescription on europe.

Also, do you know if I need a prescription to buy the needles for pen insulin? Iā€™m also worried about that, and about the transportation of these, since they activate metal detectors and it will be hard for me to travel around, do you know if they use metal detectors before you board a train in France to travel from one city to another? Iā€™ll mainly be traveling on train.

Oscarā€¦ Stanleyā€¦ whoeverā€¦

Please give me clearlyā€¦ your First Name and your Last Nameā€¦

cheers

Most people have some metal about their personā€¦ and if you do come across metal detectors, at any point in your travelsā€¦ it will not cause a great problemā€¦ since you will only be carrying needles for medication and not anything more dangerous (I hope)

and would be wise to carry the prescription (ordonance) if challenged and to self declare before going through an airport type scanner bridge.

Hi again Stella,

Itā€™s Oscar Jerome, Stanley Kubrick was indeed the film director, I said it was not too far from Oscar because he won an Academy award at least once.

absolutelyā€¦ we got blown so far off courseā€¦ with silly names and shoes sizes etcā€¦ I had forgotten what we had and hadnā€™t coveredā€¦

He was so handsome when he was young

Yes, you need prescriptions for needles. I travel with drugs and needles and itā€™s not a problem as long as you have the documents with you.

Donā€™t know about reciprocity between US and France on prescriptions. But if you have insurance that covers pre-existing conditions then perhaps easiest if to go to a GP and get new prescriptions? When I first arrived here I couldnā€™t get a specialist appointment for months, and the GP was happy to prescribe specialist drugs based on the letter I had from my previous consultant. Also useful if you need other blood tests or other care.

I need a prescription even for traveling inside France on train? for example from Paris to Bordeaux?

I donā€™t think my insurance covers my condition, since I got it since I was around 12, so about a decade ago.

Do you mean like a GP in france? I hope thatā€™s not too hard with my knowledge on French, which is like A 2.5 - B 1 At max, I will consult my insurance agent how can I do to get a working prescription that works in there, as a proof to carry around needles and insulin.

The needles look something like this, it might be small from 4mm to 8mm, but on the boxes they come from 25 to 100 and they can crowd and be detected on a metal detector I guess, thatā€™s why I ask if thereā€™s metal detectors on train stations and such (Not metro) because Iā€™ve always been embarrassed of this disease.

Hi Oscar, I am afraid Iā€™m really no expert, I used google, I am fairly sure a prescription from a dr anywhere will be valid here as long as it is for something recognisable (which your pens are), but you can also go to any dr and get a prescription. I think you get the needles as well as the little cartridges from what I saw online. As far as I am aware we donā€™t have metal detectors testing passengers before getting on trains and in any case they are a legitimate medical necessity for you, and you can prove it because you have the prescription for them.

Oscarā€¦ you are intending to travel around France for a few monthsā€¦ so I suggest you get yourself organized with the necessary phrases in Frenchā€¦ and/or carry some means of translating.

I canā€™t really understand your concerns about metal detectorsā€¦ they are only in use to protect everyone.

Should you come across a Detector ā€¦ you will be able to explain why you have triggered the alarmā€¦ and you have no need to feel embarrassed. As has been suggestedā€¦ you can forewarn the guard (whoever)ā€¦ theyā€™ll possibly put your needles to one sideā€¦ and all should be well ā€¦

You donā€™t say when you hope to arrive hereā€¦ but I would suggest you brush up on your French language skills as best as you can.

this is a great countryā€¦ do your homeworkā€¦ get organized ā€¦
and come and enjoy yourself. :relaxed: :relaxed: :relaxed:

I suppose Oscar Jerome is slightly more plausible than Stanley Kubrick - mainly by dint of not being dead, but Iā€™m not convinced

Being alive does help

Yes Jane, Iā€™ve filled Uk and Irish prescriptions here with no problems, though I have paid for the drugs- now I generally get my GP to reissue an ordinance and I get them free with my CV. In fact, his receptionist is happy to do it

Yes, you need prescriptions for needles.

No you donā€™t unless things have changed in the last year or so? Iā€™ve always popped into the pharmacy to buy them for both humain and animals without prescription? Iā€™m referring to seringue needles.

Iā€™m a type 2 diabetic and had an ordonnance for Lantus pens in Dec 2017 and Iā€™m sure that it included the needles.
Iā€™ve no recent knowledge since for some years I have managed to keep the condition stable by diet only :slightly_smiling_face:
However, we have found the paperwork and it includes:

  • Stylo injecteur dā€™insuline
  • Aiguilles pour stylo injecteur dā€™insuline 6 mm8 mm12 mm/jour

also included:

  • GLUCAGEN: 1 ampoule avec le matĆ©riel pour injection en intra-musculaire ou en sous-cutane

The last item to remedy if hypoglycaemiac ie if overdosed on insulin (but was never used)
As OH said - we must be getting closer to being French - keeping all the paperwork!
