'Where's daddy?' daughter asked Erika Kirk

I’m sorry, this drives me crazy. One American rightwing fundamentalist WASP with obnoxious views on a wide range of topics, including women’s rights, black people etc., bites the dust and there’s a nationwide outpouring of grief. Eighteen thousand brown kiddies in Palestine are slaughtered, with US weapons, and not a whisper.

The US is a sick, sick country.

At least Erika Kirk doesn’t have to say "Daddy’s under the rubble, with all your brothers and sisters..

Let’s never forget that after two sitting representatives in Minnesota were murdered by a right-wing gunman, not one single Republican member of Congress condemned it. Not a single one…..

I hope my politics never takes away my humanity and sympathy for a grieving family.

The US is sick. Most of the world is like it. Let’s try and “go high when they go low”.

The Dems tried that for years. It’s not working. It’s time to fight fire with fire. This does NOT mean go around shooting people, but in the US, the right is using tactics that are illegal, immoral, and most definitely unconstitutional, aided by a rogue Supreme Court and a bunch of GOP Congresscritters that have completely abdicated their legal responsibilities. The left has to respond accordingly, or it’s game over.

Well, that’s certainly what some of the UK press is doing, which is why the Guardian and I parted company. Don’t, debate, don’t try to persuade, don’t explain, because who needs an explanation when you’ve got a slogan?

I posted a brief piece from Bernie Sanders in the other thread. He still thinks debate is important.

The moment you abandon that, you abandoned your country to whichever bloc is more powerful and more ruthless.

Jonathon Pie’s excellent rant after Trump won his first term nailed the lack of debate and vilification of folks that don’t think they way you want them to.

Lack of civilised debate is something that all groups on every continent are guilty of.

Correct. This is most evident in the makeup of the Supreme Court, which would be close to evenly split had Mitch McConnell respected established precedent.

I blame Mitch McConnell for most of what is currently happening in the US, and I am not alone.

Trump’s political career would have been over if Mitch had simply voted to convict Trump in the second impeachment trial. He would have taken several hesitant R Senators with him.

I saw his comments and of course he is right on. I’ve been a Bernie supporter for years. However, if you think that “lack of debate” is what’s wrong with the US, then I suggest that you need to study US politics a bit more.

Exactly. McConnell has a hell of a lot to answer for.

We tried going high in the US - the majority of my countrymen and women were not interested. It’s a broken society.

Steady with the womansplaining, @Motherrobyn !

From what you’ve said on the present subject, and from what I have seen of the standards of debate in the US, both sides have clearly lost the art of rhetoric.

I think it is, but that would make me want to fight to mend it even more. I’m just stubborn, perhaps.

We’re so tired of ‘both sides’….

Do both sides deny the existence of science and reason?

If you’re going to quote me, at least quote what I said, rather than picking out a couple of words!

I’m wondering if you’ll restore my faith !

Fair enough, my apologies. If you are judging that based Trump and Biden, it is rhetoric and so much more. They were/are both unfit. We had many better choices but chose those two .

You are a very nice and kind person Porridge, a better person than me. My hatred of the people that have slaughtered the Gaza children and those that have aided and abetted them is visceral.

Going high doesn’t work, which has been shown for years. It just means we loose while feeling morally superior. When they go low we need to go lower. so that they feel our wrath.

Absolutely, I was lucky enough to see Bernie Saunders speak earlier this year. But unfortunately debate cannot be the only arrow in our quiver.

We’ve run out of cheeks to turn.

I stand by my comment. The problems in the US go way WAY past lack of rhetoric, debate, whatever. It’s a rigged system and has been from the founding,

I’ve posted Dr. Heather Cox Richardson’s letters before. She’s much better at womansplaining than I will ever be, if you care enough to have a read.

“Let’s try and go high when they go low”.

So, unilateral disarmament?

This whole attitude of “we are too good to sink to their level” is just one more thing the Obama’s have to answer for. Starting with Barack’s utter unwillingness to speak out against the forces of religious fascism and to only address the issues occasionally and then only in vague platitudes.
