Why has Netflix screwed up my tv?

I don’t know what has happened but when going to Netflix today a panel appeared saying welcome to my new deal
Then another one appeared asking for my personal details DOB etc.
I don’t want a new deal so tried to get out of it and now I have a blank screen saying no signal. I know this is nothing to do with the dish as the weather is fine and in any case the French dish gives the same signal too.

I pressed the home button on the remote, never done that before, and up pops a screen with lots of options including Netflix and YT and a load of others I don’t use

Next line down are Netflix films which I can get access to.

Down again and there are options for input, non of which gets me back to Freesat

Below that are a series of Settings

What the hell has happened?

Are you looking at a bar that goes across the bottom of your screen with lots of TV channels on it?

If so, that is your Smart TV “home bar” and one of the boxes along that bar probably is blue should have something like “HDMI 1” in it - that is the button that gets you back to your freesat settings.

It may say HDMI 2 or HDMI 3.

You may have to scroll along the bar to find that box.

If bot and you just have the black screen of death, sometimes just turning on your Freesat box is enough to get your smart TV to talk to it.

Here’s hoping!

Sorry, just realised it’s more complicated than what I’ve envisaged - Do you have a “source” button on your remote? You are looking for that HDMI option.

Wow thanks, I thought I had pressed that along with all the other things, it must have been HDMI 2 I pressed, twice, by mistake.

But any idea how I got there in the first place, and if I decide to ditch Netflix as a result, what is Prime like? Any good?

My post crossed with yours, you hit it right the first time, but I would like to know how it happened.

Your smart TV is preloaded with the apps to take you to all these different channels (Molotov is often another one) and as you say YT. When you hit the “home” button on your remote all these apps come up. We use the home button all the time when we can’t find anything to watch on Freesat.

Mind you - we can rarely find much to watch on Netflix or Prime either!

I suggest you look at Prime’s home page on your computer and look at the films and shows they offer before you subscribe. I scrolled through Prime last night and felt it was either ancient films - Love Actually, really - or the types of films and shows I wouldn’t watch.

We subscribe to both Netflix and Prime but quite frankly neither are great. AppleTV seems to be slower to upload new shows and they tend (for us) to be better quality. We’ve watched Slow Horses, Shrinking, Pachinko, The Morning Show and enjoyed all of them. OH thinks he pays about 9,99 € a month.
Our smart TV doesn’t like Apple TV (no app for it) so we watch it from our laptop, plugged into the back of the TV with a USB and the TV screen is just a large monitor.

Although Netflix has a lot of dross there are some gold nuggets to be had, eg Queens Gambit, and we’ve enjoyed things like The Diplomat (new season coming).

NB: I’ve just realised I’m talking about series which we tend to prefer - more time for character and plot development - whereas I seem to remember you prefer films. In which case, I think you just have to trawl through their home pages to see which channel appeals most.

Yes, I pay about that a month for Netflix, nothing for YT, I just put up with and skip the adverts, but I have an idea that this new deal from Netflix involves paying less to avoid, most of, the adverts. And I prefer to remain the way I am which is why I didn’t want to start registering with them any more than I already have done.

But if they are going to shove that in my face everytime I want to check out some films, I’m inclined to go elsewhere.

I have Prime and enjoy it although annoyingly many good films are only in french even with the changing of the language button pressed and to be honest, the french just do not know how to dub voices very well. Lots of good things and if you are a fan of Clarkson & co you can watch The Grand Tour from the start and all their hilarious adventures as well as Clarksons Farm which I do recommend, to while away the evenings that are starting to get long and dark again. I have Plex too but that is from the states and my main UK system is ExpatTV which comes from Ireland but shows all the ITV and other stations. Netflix I keep for the grandchildren as its good for their english.

You get your Netflix via your satellite?

No, LIvebox, but while it somehow stopped me switching back to satellite radio with a ‘No Signal’ sign I knew the problem wasn’t the satellite this time because the French satellite signal wouldn’t work either. Sue put me right as to how to get out of it but I am really annoyed that it interfered in the first place. I will be really ticked off if they are trying to force me from the way I get it at the moment.

If we find something strange happens to our TV (like suddenly on some strange French channel), we tend to look closer to home - Bertie has been know to sit on the remote when settling on the sofa.

I think Netflix have just changed their subscriptions:
cheaper deal with ads or option to pay more with no ads

By cheaper, without double checking, I mean possibly cheaper than you were paying before.

Yes, that’s the way I see it, except that I don’t see any option to stay as I am without adverts. 'Till it is made clear I certainly won’t be filling in their form.

These seem to be the options…

No. 2 is what I’ve got but it seems to be trying to force me onto No. 1. I see no option to stay where I can.

Now everytime I click on Netflix it launches straight into me giving them all my personal details. No other option is there.

The only way I can watch any films now is to hit the ‘Home’ button on the tv remote and then it takes me to a screen which, amongst other things, offers me just 12 films to watch. Can’t get access to all the others which are normally there.

This is all I get now.

ooooh look at me, doing a screenshot.

Ah, I see. It looks like you’re on the €5.99 deal and so are subjected to adverts. They want to target those adverts… maybe it’s something to do with age-restricted products like alcohol.

You think David’s not old enough to see alcohol ads?

Yes Prime is very good although as Shiba mentioned quite a few films arrive in French (and sometimes Spanish or other languages) and I have yet to find a way to change the soundtrack.
We used to have Netflix but for the amount that we watch the Prime channel is more than adequate and saves pennies.

Haha, not me. Netflix.

Well, while I wait to attain my age of majoration, I am pleased to report that the mystery is solved, although not pleased with the result or the way it was done.

Following guru Eddie’s advice I managed to pin down what was happening and it appears that, as of the beginning of this month I was changed without my knowledge or permission from my previous €10.99 with no adverts deal to a €5.99 one with them. Proved when I checked the bank account.

My first thought was to shoot it back to what I had agreed to but then found that my previous €10.99 one had shot up to €13.49, so, reluctantly, I have agreed to the new deal but only for the time being. If I can find a better one, perhaps Prime, I will kick them into touch tout de suite. Any decent company would have given me the choice, ergo, they are not a decent company imo.
