Just come back from the vets! I left 2 used AAA batteries from the TV remote on the coffee table and to my horror realised Rona had one in her mouth, which I retrieved but then couldnāt find the other. So, called the emergency vet in town. He gave her something to eat, then injected her to make her sick ā I sat with her with a large tin bowl wrapped in a black bin bag while she threw up. Nothing there. Then he X-rayed her ā throat, chest and stomach, but nothing. Which then had me worried! Came home to find OH had turned the lounge upside down ā no joy. Considerable relief when I found it under the TV table. The vet asked me to ring him if I found it ā so relief all round. He was a lovely young man who was very good with Rona.
Pouring with rain in town (which is only 7km away), but nothing here!!! Canāt bear it. Storms all round, but missing us yet again.
Weāve arrived safely and the house is still standing!
However life is not without its challenges: there were a lot of dead bees and bee deposits in the bathroom, though nothing like enough for a full swarm, and you have to ask why they are there like that. Cleaning further in the kitchen, I saw a puddle on the floor behind the pellet stove, and at first was wondering if the company that fitted it would cover sealing the flue liner back into the chimney under their insurance. However when I pulled the power cable for the stove away to mop up it was sticky. Understanding came fairly quickly after that, however there seemed to be hairy caterpillars embedded in the liquid honey.
It looks like weāll need to find a ramoneur to be sure the chimney is clear before winter (and to fulfill legal obligations of course). Wonder how long the honey will keep coming and where the nest is - I suspect it may have fallen down the chimney and is on top of the register plate, but thatās for another day. Thereās no sound of bees, so they arenāt around at the bottom and I canāt see any flying in at the top.
The switch on my (very cheap, Action) bedside light failed. It was necessary to destroy the switch to get the wires out, but now working again with a decent quality replacement.
Iāve just finished doing my leclerc drive order and Iāll pick it up tomorrow. Itās so convenient as it means I donāt have to struggle around the store. I thought this was funny though - donāt know what measles are and I thought bubbles should be in the drinks section. But as I say, this new method of doing our shopping makes me a happy chappy(ess)
People in my OHās company think itās very clever to use AI to prepare for meetings and openly vaunt it.
The person at Leclerc ignored one of the rules of translating that is to look up the word the other way. If they had looked up the French for measles, I donāt think they would have been left in any doubt as to what the word means.
Actually that reminds me of a restaurant near our last house. The owner wasnāt a pleasant man and seemed to enjoy being rude to tourists. No one including the locals was upset when he sold up, although it was a shame for whichever exotic French island got him next.
He had the menu translated into English, apparently by a local car mechanic, and it had some absolute howlers. My cousin came to stay after we stopped eating with this man and we spent several minutes reading the menu in fits of laughter. He could see what we were doing and didnāt look happy but there wasnāt much he could do.
I havenāt been into a supermarket for several years. The smell (the laundry aisle, cleaning products, customersā perfumesā¦) was making me feel increasingly unwell, and I had to change my clothes and have a shower when I got home. Luckily, the ādriveā came along just then ā itās changed my life
Iāve got better things to do than push a shopping trolley, be deafened by the music, and get swept up in the special offers and new products on display, waiting at the tillā¦
And for the past year, I havenāt even been going out to collect my orders ā I get them delivered: that leaves me more time for more interesting things, and it works out cheaper than going there myself !
Finished the flooring in my bird hide today but what hard work, Stretching and twisting the planks to fit each other and then drilling a guide hole to make it easier before banging like mad while holding it in place.
But what pleased me was my wonderful smart watch, a couple of times told me that there was loud banging. I could have told it that but didnāt know how.
Then, when I had finished and sat down to enjoy my achievement it buzzed again to say that my resting heat rate had returned to where it was before. It is so useful , but what does that mean, good or bad?
Oh, btw, every one of the planks was 3 cms too long, so, in baches of 4, I had to chainsaw the surplus off before I could use them. Perhaps they have different metrics in Lithuania.
But a moment of particular triumph, you will notice the chair on which I sat to measure the distance to my line of sight, and then added the dimensions of the breeze block, the cross beams and the planks to decide where my viewing slits should be. Absolutely perfect, who needs carpenters?
Only the floorboards have been treated and I am working as fast as I can after deciding it would be much easier to paint the finished article after construction rather the having wet/sticky bits and bobs hanging about all over the place.
Weather permitting, I can work in rain but high winds and lightning is a definite nono in amongst big trees. So while needing the rain I hope it will be steady and not violent, it is promised for today here.
