French Motorways / Toll/Tag system

Tolls paid it all off but it was converted to ‘congestion charge’.

One of the ‘party tricks’ of the London branch of the TVR Car Club was to assemble as many Tivs as possible and rumble thru’ the Dartford tunnel in convoy. I never made it to one of these myself but know from the sound of my single V8 in a tunnel [windows down for full effect] what 15-20 V8s would sound like. Ride of the Valkeries!

Done that through various tunnels here on the continent, with TR Register France…

What a row… but seeing so many grown men, wearing such big, big smiles… that was a lovely sight !!

Great sounds. 20 TVRs would be +/- 6000 bhp. In just over 20 cars’ lengths? hahaha!

A lady member of the TVRCC changed my mind about which TVR I was going to get. I first intended to get the V6 3-litre S2/S3 but when I saw her write, “Anything less than a V8 is for wimps”, that was it. A V8 is was.

So for an American wanting one of these (they’re called e-passes or fastpasses in the U.S.) since we don’t have a U.K. address we would have to investigate the Vinci or the bipandgo fast pass? Are those the only options? And if I am following all the answers correctly the Vinci one is probably only France and bipandgo is France and Spain?

I think the only stipulations are a french bank account and an email address, certainly for Bip and go. I believe it does cover France and Spain and additionally car parks where detailed

Thank you. I’ll have to do some research and see if bipandgo or Vinci will accept American credit cards. We have a French bank account, for over two years now, and the only reason we obtained it was because our wifi provider would only do direct debit from a French bank. We have found French banks to be VERY difficult, two years on and we still can’t get a book of checks out of them - and since no checks we have to do cash withdrawals to pay French contractors (and it takes two weeks and a ream of paper to get a cash withdrawal), so we avoid running anything through the French bank.

I’m a bip and go man myself, have been for years. They also do a badge that works in Italy and Spain too.

You do. They send you a new one and ask you to return that old. My first one must have lasted the best part of ten years.

I wonder how many people think, as you do, that abnormal loads are toll dodgers. Quite the contrary, the vast majority of them are banned on autoroutes in France and forced to go through the most unsuitable of villages.

Indeed there are designated ‘exceptionelles’ routes throughout France. I think the justification is that if you are paying for a section of road you shouldn’t be impeded on it.

Compare this with UK rules and the exact opposite is true, with the result that already overcrowded motorways become absolutely jammed because of one wide load taking up two lanes at the obligatory slow speed of 90 km/hr.

Back to France, I once spent some time chatting to a car pilote (private escort) driver at a particularly acute turn on the old N 89 between Perigueux and Terrasson. This very long load could not turn left, as directed, but had to go straight across the cross roads, then reverse onto the N 89 in the direction of Perigueux, in order to then continue ahead towards Terrasson. If any one knows it the place is call La Mule Blanche. This load was not wide, or heavy, and thus would have casued no disruption on an autoroute, but it certainly did on the N 89 that day, which gave me the time to talk to the car pilote. :slightly_smiling_face:

I got mine from:

https://www.emovis-tag.co.uk/subscription/operation-Subscription.Introduction

Received it in the post in England within 3 days and was a pleasure to drive through France without any hassle.

I’m charged via direct debit at the end of the month.

Just signed up on Vinci ULYS for their hipper.
6 months no admin fee, then €2 a month when used and it covers France, Spain and portugal

That should read bipper not hipper, before someone jumps on my typo

You can edit a post - just click on the pencil.

Not sure if many people realise it, but you can have multiple dongles. We got 3, gave one to each son to use whenever they drove over. It proved very useful for a trip in a visiting sports car with a dog on the passenger seat. LiberT set up 3 accounts, no monthly fee for tags which aren’t used. You can fit one in each car if you have more than one car in your household, all paid for by same credit card automatically.

So will the tolls will take all Visa Debit Cards now ? At one time it was only credit cards that worked

@ukpatco I think the problem was with some pre-paid cards…

Our Ulys (Vinci) card has our French registered car linked to it.

I would like to use it in another car.

Has anyone tried to use a Tag from a different car? (possibly a UK car?)

I have asked Vinci but no response yet.

At one point I had 3 tags as they were registered to each class of vehicle. As I changed vehicle I didnt inform anyone and nothing came of it

I have found on their website that I can change the registration plate and specify the country so that is great.

I’ve used the same tag in my last 2 cars, and a British reg car I brought over
