Just ending a visit for my granddaughter ‘s graduation. My DIL is apparently no longer talking to her Trump supporting father.
Easy to forget that, while enjoying splits in the Orange man’s following, that can also mean family splits to.
I am lucky to not suffer so but I do have a good friend with whom I steer clear of such subjects.
We underestimate Trump. He’s just scored 30 out of 30 in his cognitive test. 4th time in a row. Apparently it’s a sign of extreme intelligence. Reminds me of those dictators who get 100% of the votes in an election.

Am I right to be pleased about Republican defiance that is starting to show?
To me this is a sign of some backbone, but which appears to be limited to very few of them.
Republicans in the Senate have forced the president to withdraw a demand for $1bn in security funding for his White House ballroom project, and to abandon a proposed $1.8bn “anti-weaponization fund” that would have seen Trump’s political allies – including offenders convicted over the 6 January 2021 assault on the US Capitol – awarded compensation at taxpayers’ expense.

I just saw a post on Bluesky, although I haven’t seen it in the papers yet, that he wants to move $10bn of taxpayer funds to his pet peace project, where he and his cronies decide what happens to the money.

Apparently there is now a part of the US government’s website dedicated to the deportation of people. It’s framed to seem a bit like the X files, with phrases mentioning aliens walking and living among us. It’s desperately ugly stuff but unsurprising coming from such desperately ugly people. One academic stated that the site is probably just directed not at making people want to attack these “aliens” but simply to become bystanders.
Times change. In a survey of 15 countries, only 1 in 10 Europeans now think of the US as an ally.
