The thing I do blame Biden for was clinging to power rather than helping a successor get a decent shot at the Presidency. Which opened the door wider for Mr. T.

Disagree, because that’s an unwarranted extrapolation.
Secondly, if you go down that route then one should not only contest the phrase ‘seventy-nine year old’, but also ‘man’. Phrases like ‘this person’ may be fine in legalise, but otherwise surely they’re rather anodyne.
As the predominant gender I’m fine with man. If it was a woman and you’d said woman I might possibly but possibly not, have queried it. After all, both genders can be equally affected by age prejudice at the age of 79. So after raising the implied age prejudice issue I feel I have probably done enough.
But surely, unlike in French, masculine isn’t the neutral default - that’s 'person
Depends if you’re being politically correct or not. I’m not.
But PC with ageist comments?
Yeah age prejudice is a huge issue across generations. A surprising number of people operate it without realising it.
Wait and see till you’re 79 if you like ![]()
The line of succession of cabinet officers is in the order of their agencies’ creation.
Because these 20 odd clowns are never in the same place at the same time (such as during the State of the Union Address) and there is always at least one of them absent for continuity of ‘‘government’’ puropses, the possibility of all of them being snuffed at one fell swoop is literally impossible (short of a nuclear first strike on DC perhaps).
The late President Reagan was just a couple of days shy of 78 years old when his second term ended. It is now known that he was exhibiting aspects of Alzheimer’s for some time before that. Not ideal for a leader, let alone one with nuclear permissions.
To my mind, it is not the age but health that counts. Someone who is 80 may have retained mental and physical faculties beyond someone much younger. And someone still under 65 may already have frailties. A leader needs to be strong and alert for the stresses of their onerous responsibility.
Never hurts to require a thorough and transparent examination!
Presidents are protected by their parties (and it looks like, based on reports about Biden, both parties are guilty). I remember talking to a young man right after Reagan left office; he’d been some sort of medical student (sorry, it was a very long time ago), and he said that in his class, they saw clear signs of dementia right after Reagan’s second term started. I’m sure that his doctors were aware at the same time, but of course no one in government said a word.
Remind me - how old was Boris Johnson?
I agree with you - I don’t think age is the problem.
In the early stages of dementia it is, I suspect, possible to function as a head of state - just with the normal level of support that they get; diary managed, a small army of people to make sure they are in the right place at the right time and another one dedicated to distilling complex matters to a few short pages that can easily be digested.
Is Trump dementing? His opponents would say yes but they have been doing so for the past nine years. I’m not totally convinced. Dementia is different from age related cognitive decline (which I think Trump does show, and from a low starting point) - my 90 year old father is showing clear signs of short term memory loss which I think amount to early dementia, as far as I can see Trump does not. Perhaps away from the cameras it is more obvious.
Also, if Trump was showing signs of early dementia in his first term (as is often claimed) it wold be really obvious by now.
To wit: Bernie Sanders is almost 84 and as far as I can tell is still mentally quite sharp.
NYT…
The United States’ currency has weakened more than 10 percent over the past six months……” and “The last time the dollar weakened so much at the start of the year was 1973…”.
I’m waiting to hear Trump say Biden is to blame.
Well he is, for being less bad than Trump. ![]()
Maybe, but I think Trump will soon blame Biden, and Biden will probably say nothing.
It’s really painful…
I’m sure the Dems can do another Brezhnev with Biden if they think it’ll benefit them.
There’s another who might point to a new beginning for the Democrats, but too early to say, the democratic socialist contender for Mayor of New York - Zohran Mamdani. It appears he has a good chance of winning.
Thing is, New York is (as I understand it) a solidly Democrat town. It’s a long way from someone sensible winning there to beating MAGA and / or the Republicans in Florida or Wyoming.
