I simply cannot fathom being a Prime Minister with an 80 seat majority, and having wasted it by not implementing anything of any value. He could’ve done almost whatever he wanted. Instead his legacy will be corrupt deals to party donors, dodgy wallpaper and illegal Downing Street parties. What a way to run a country.
Bizarre, isn’t it? His pursuit of power (or prestige) was like a dog chasing a car, once he’d caught it he had no idea what to do with it.
This seems to be the fate of many right wing governments though - once in power they can’t or don’t govern (one might even go as far as noting they don’t really care as long as they can asset strip the country).
He has always been like that. He presents an appealing persona, but he has no real depth or sense of values, except those that promote Boris Johnson.
This reminded me of another simile I read years ago on Gordon Brown’s impact after taking over from Blair: it was like your favourite uncle had spent years in the garden shed - he must, you thought, be building something truly marvelous - but then he came out with nothing.
I see Truss is proving to be a disaster even before elected.
This morning she announced that the idea that civil servants and other public service employees would have their wages adjusted according to where they lived. Naturally this would involve paying those in the North lower rates.
The policy lasted about 12 hours during which it seems that a lot of Northern Tory MPs explained that their chances or re-election with such a policy in place would be somewhere south of zero, and a crashing U-turn was executed.
Expect more mad/bad policies thought up on the hoof and subjected to no analysis before being hastily withdrawn once she is elected “leader”.
Super
supported by Grease-Mugg of course (who’s obviously after a job if de Pfeffle doesn’t make him His Worship the Lord Peter Whimsicalness of course…) which helped tremendously in killing the idea before it really got off the ground no doubt ![]()
Rees-Mogg said he would not serve under any PM other than Johnson.
I suspect that promise will last about as long as Truss’s policy on public sector wages.
Though I completely expect the latter to be brought back as policy at some point - just with less fanfare.
Oh, it seems the ballot papers have been delayed on the advice of NCSC over concerns about the potential for voter fraud…
Maybe they realised that not all the Tory party members have a valid form of photo ID, eh?
Well, apparently up to 50% of the votes to have Johnson re-elected were fraudulent - so perhaps their voting systems are not exactly secure.
I thought that they were going to trial an online voting system for this election… perhaps they asked Dido Harding and she fucked it up ![]()
To be fair I wouldn’t ask Dido Harding to run a car hand wash station.
Or WTF
Yes, both acronyms appropriate.
I see Sunak has now proposed outlawing criticism of the UK (boy are you in trouble @John_Scully !).
They’re in a race each to out-fasce the other (yes yes spellcheck, I know I made that word up).
It’s mind-boggling how the political right can keep going on and on about ‘cancel culture’ but openly, blatantly, propose to outlaw free speech.
Does the ‘cancel culture’ obsession come from the fact that they do it naturally, all the time, and assume everybody else is the same?
TBH I think the UK can only escape a full blown slide into fascism if the present government is replaced - and quickly. Realistically although I have been hugely disappointed by Starmer and his stance on so many issues I honestly do not think he would take the country further down the road to totalitarianism.
The Tories seem to want to destroy the country and to rule, and profit from, the chaos that they cause.
I think there will be a widespread financial crisis in the UK this winter as people are simply unable to pay energy bills and service debt.
It’s all going to get very messy.
I think its already begun… The BoE has just put interest rates up again - people already not coping will soon be joined by those who were just about coping…
There was an article from The Guardian but given some distaste on SF for independent commentary… I’ve linked ITV news instead ![]()
I think I already linked this:
Some forecasts suggest RPI will hit 17%
then perhaps expect another failure by this Tory clown circus to honour the pledge to keep the triple lock in place for pensioners - Coffey must be wetting herself with excitement (assuming she continues in the job after the new puppet is put in place) ![]()
