PM candidates

Interestngly Triss said she would keep the triple lock - I guess that is to appeal to the demographic as they say.

But, as you point out, that promise is worth little when they abandon it when it is not convenient.

so did de Pfeffle in the manifiasco… taking a leaf out of @Geof_Cox book and making convenient words up

@graham That’s an outstandingly good portmanteau word and I shall be using it :slightly_smiling_face:

I think it would be bloody irresponsible if next year’s pension increase is based on this Autumn’s inflation rate, extraordinary times call for sensible governance not ‘knee jerk’ responses to ‘short term’ problems.

you can always offer it up to the next chancellor or pensions minister to spaff up the wall Tim…
OTOH there are some pensioners clearly on the breadline making choices between eating and heating who would benefit from it having had the previous year’s cash splashed on vanity Tory projects

If pensioners are given 13% what do you think public sector workers will quite rightly ask for?

By all means award a decent increase to mitigate some of the effects of the COL crisis but don’t give pensioners a massive income uplift just to stick to crazy pledge given whilst campaigning to be PM.

a pledge is a pledge… I realise that counts for nothing with the Tories but they were elected on it… if they didn’t want it, they should have voted an alternative.

At the time they were elected no one knew the effects of the pandemic nor that Putin would invade Ukraine, both are ‘extraordinary’ events so that should give them an ‘out’ to act in the country’s best interests which is not maintaining the triple lock right now.

Hadnt Russia invaded the Donbas in 2014?

Election was in December 2019 after the covid outbreak in China - the warning signs were there, if you remember back it was no great surprise when it arrived.

I realise you are not a pensioner yourself (yet) and as you have worked in France for a number of years, you probably won’t be affected by this anyway… but please do spare a thought for those who are affected…

And as for the pandemic excuse (which is all it is) if de Pfeffle hadn’t spaffed so much public money up the wall on his Tory mates in corrupt contracts and the like including vanity hair brained schemes which cost milions and and and… perhaps the Country wouldn’t be in the mess it is financially just now.

You have a point - but…

If every time inflation is embarrassingly high to give pensioners a cost of living rise the real world value of the pension falls a bit more, and the UK state pension is already one of the lowest in Europe.

but some people just don’t seem to care if it won’t affect them directly…
I didn’t see many of those not affected by the loss of the WFA lending support to UK pensioners in France either when that was lost for spurious reasons…

Of course it affects me Graham, not right now but in a few years when I’m eligible by which time it will no doubt be around the £250 per week mark.

Confused of Charente…
if you have been working in France for many years, how will pensions in the UK affect you since your cotisations paid here will determine the competent authority when it comes time to retire

I don’t intend to retire here Graham and will officially move back to the UK before I hit retirement age.

then won’t that work the other way round… ie France will become your last competent state even though you move back to the UK?

And if I work for a year before being eligible for the UK state pension?

Well, that’s you for you to discover
But it really doesn’t change my view about people who seem not to care about UK pensioners residing in France or their welfare - some it seems are well suited to the “well, I’m all right jack, sod you” types so common in the UK these days.

I guess that means you don’t know.

why would I Tim?
I don’t work, haven’t worked in France and I’m retired and have absolutely no intention of going back to plague island in any event…
